His background is shrouded in mystery, his powers are supernatural and his reputation is whispered about among men. He goes by different names, but folks just call him The Magician.
One night not so long ago, he appeared from a place between space and time. The Magician stepped into this world, materializing in a cloud of crystal stars and soft pink smoke. Some say he is the guardian angel of all resident DJ’s, others claim he’s a former airline pilot who crashed an afterparty – some say it’s just an illusion, a well performed hoax. But is it really?
Everywhere The Magician goes, there’s music in the air. People come under his spell and dance like there’s no tomorrow. Lost in a purple haze, transfixed in a flurry of white doves. He makes clubbers float through disco heaven and takes them around the house on a magic carpet ride. Behind his green translucent eyes, there’s an unlimited knowledge of the musical past, present and future.
The Magician shifts shapes in a heartbeat and appears all throughout the world. One moment he’s sprinkling space dust on the Balearic isles, next he’s performing his rhythmic hocus pocus between the smoke and mirrors of a glitzy nightclub in Santiago or Moscow. When he vanishes, the only proof of his existence The Magician leaves are his ‘magic tapes’, a sample of his magnetising skills.
No magic wand or top hat needed, it’s all in his wizardly mind and flexible fingertips. The Magician has more than one trick up his sleeve though; word has it that the mystery man is working on a special formula to transform the musical workings of others – and don’t be amazed if, one day, he perfects his craft and creates his very own brand of spectral sounds.
Forget that Potter kid, Gandalf or Merlin, and get ready for a new chapter in the world of wonder and bewitchment. Get ready for The Magician.
If Cole Medina and his American Standard imprint can hit big with slo-mo reworks of Olivia Newton John and Spandau Ballet, then LOTI, aka Lord Of the Isles, looks set for big things with «What’s Lord Got To Do With It?», which reinvents Tina Turner’s 80s soft-pop monster «What’s Love Got To Do With It?». There’s no second hand emotions here though, just sizzling summer bar vibes – with that chugging rhythm and drifty flute atmospherics, it’s like the charity shop find B-side Balearic remix you dream about uncovering but never actually do. On the flipside LOTI ups the pace with the excellent «With An Angel», which takes snippets of Marvin Gaye’s «Come Live With Me Angel» and weaves them into quite a driving disco-house groove – one for the later-hour dancefloor.

Havana Candy are a mysterious pair of cosmic crusaders hailing from deep within the East Lancs metropolitan district. Brimming with northern balearic attitude and a penchant for country gent attire, toy camera's and specimen carp hunting, the pair were fed from an early age on a diet of Chicago, Detroit, disco, krautrock and Italian cosmic grooves.
Havana Candy continue in their pursuit of all things deep and spacey, delivering a four track EP of synth and piano led, Italo influenced Nu-Disco, backed up by an excellent remix of Rimentos Sical by Italian duo Irregular Disco Workers.

Italian newcomer La Tuerie seriously drops the tempo on his debut release for Amsterdam’s Sleazy Beats Recordings, coming up with four slow-burning beatdown disco and boogie tracks that are screaming out for play in sweaty basements or sun-kissed beaches.
«Midnight» sets the levels to sleazy as the strains of the Love Unlimited Orchestra’s «Midnight Groove» lift off the groove. Seriously fattened up and set to a rock-solid 4/4 disco-house rhythm, this is sure to have some serious head-nodding going on. Next up for the chop-n-loop treatment is Donna McGhee’s stupendous soul sizzler «It Ain’t No Big Thing», which appears here as «Big Things». Hot! the deal-sealer for me is «Zanzibar», which takes my favourite boogie-disco cut – Class Action’s «Weekend» – and PITCHES IT WAY DOWN, for a cosmic boogie reinterpretation. Add some well placed filtering, loops and total drop-outs, and you have a summer killer – this is MASSIVE! Last but not least is «Tatsumi». A more upbeat disco groover of unknown original. If you’re into any of the Super Value / Kolour LTD / Small World Disco Edits etc series then you’ll love this record. As usual, this is a strictly limited pressing: no repress, no digital. It’s wax or nothing!

Following a brief diversion to allow for the release of Dean Mereditch solo project Rhythm Odyssey, Stafford's
most productive duo are reunited for a new single. It's perhaps a little looser than their greatest work, combining
that familiar low-end throb with fuzzy vocals, maudlin pianos and scratchy guitars. While solid, it's the accompanying
remixes that offer more thrills. The real killer comes from Brummie nu-Balaeric types The Main Steam, whose
Country Fishing Trip version is a delightfully dubbed-out excursion that sounds like early Fleetwood Mac after a trip
down the Paradise Garage. Leo Zero excels, too, offering up a version that neatly draws out the original's hidden disco chops.
